Sports Law

Russell McVeagh's breadth of experience in various practice areas makes it the first choice for sports law issues.

Sport raises a number of unique legal issues - from the structure of the employment/contractor relationship to the management of complex on-field and off-field disciplinary processes. Our sports law team has extensive experience in the management of these issues.

In addition, the commercialisation of sport means that the success of a competition or event may depend on an ability to protect the reputation and intellectual property of the event and its competitors. We have expertise in the application of the Major Events Management Act 2007 and the interface with sponsorship arrangements. We also have significant experience with some of the more practical ways of enforcing rights in this area.

We act for a number of sporting associations (both within New Zealand and internationally) and prominent individuals who require advice or assistance with sports law issues.

Russell McVeagh's sports law team is led by Michael Heron and Richard McIlraith. Michael is a partner in Russell McVeagh's litigation team and is a Board Member for Drug Free Sport New Zealand and has particular expertise in trial advocacy, regulatory proceedings, health law and criminal proceedings. Richard is the partner in Russell McVeagh's employment team and is consistently recognised as one of New Zealand's leading employment law practitioners by the Asia Pacific Legal 500.
