Land Transport

Land Transport forms a key part of New Zealand's infrastructure. The land transport legal context includes obligations imposed by the Land Transport Management Act 2003, the Transit New Zealand Act 1989 and the New Zealand Transport Strategy, within the wider framework set by the Resource Management Act and the Local Government Act 2002.

These obligations operate within an environment which requires prioritising of funding, balancing of national benefits and local costs, and recognition of the importance of enabling future development while still maintaining an effective and efficient State highway network.

Understanding the pitfalls brought about by the current state of the land transport system, and receiving advice on how best to manage those risks, has become an essential part of any approval strategy for any retail, commercial or industrial development which generates traffic.  As well as representing a risk for such developments, the almost insatiable demand for funding in the land transport sector offers significant opportunitites for others.

Russell McVeagh offers a team including Resource Management, Corporate Advisory, Finance and Public Law experts that can advise you on how best to navigate your project through the pitfalls and how best to take advantage of the opportunities.
