Forestry

Russell McVeagh is very active in the forestry sector and acts for a number of domestic and international clients involved in forestry.

We have advised on all matters relevant to the acquisition of forests, including: 

  • corporate and commercial legal advice; 
  • property advice; 
  • Maori land advice; 
  • planning and environmental due diligence; 
  • tax advice; 
  • obtaining necessary consents from the Overseas Investment Office; 
  • competition law issues; 
  • negotiation and preparation of acquisition, management and log purchase agreements, forestry and cutting rights, and debt and equity funding documentation.

We also provide ongoing advice to a number of clients in the forestry sector, including advice on Maori land issues, rental and stumpage disputes, transport and other service contracts, access and roading rights, joint ventures and log purchase agreements.

We have acted on many of New Zealand's largest forestry transactions including, most recently, advising Hancock Natural Resource Group on the acquisition of 300,000 hectares of commercial plantation timberlands in four transactions from Kiwi Forests Group, Tenon, Harvard and Carter Holt Harvey. We continue to provide ongoing advice to Hancock.
