His particular areas of expertise include cross-border financing transactions, retail offerings of debt and equity securities, the establishment of managed funds and other investment vehicles, acquisitions and divestments, and the tax consequences of employee remuneration packages. Shaun has also represented clients in their dealings with Inland Revenue, including obtaining binding rules and in taxation disputes.
- Advising on structured capital raisings, preference share financings and other financing proposals.
- Advising on acquisitions and divestments of New Zealand and offshore businesses, and on group restructurings.
- Acting for New Zealand and foreign banks in cross border structured financing transactions.
- Advising banks and other institutions on tax consequences of investment products and managed funds, including under the portfolio investment entity (PIE) rules.
- Advising on the tax consequences of employee remuneration packages, including fringe benefits, salary sacrifice arrangements and KiwiSaver.
- Providing advice on tax aspects of supply arrangements (including GST and withholding tax issues).
- Representing clients in their dealings with Inland Revenue, including in connection with binding rulings and tax investigations.
- Advising on, and representing clients in connection with, disputes and litigation with Inland Revenue.
- Working with Inland Revenue officials on law reform issues and tax policy matters.
